CHAPTER FOUR

“EMPAT”

The sundrenched beach glistened in the heat. Jenny pushed her hands against her surfboard and lazily kicked her feet around until she was facing Steph. “We need sunglasses with straps on them so they stay on our heads.”

Steph, also sitting on her surfboard, shielded her eyes with one hand and peered out across the ocean. They had apparently picked the wrong break to go to as the sand-bottom beach was flat today.

It was always hard to get back into surfing. Neither girl was especially good, so the big wave in front of their losmen was intimidating—especially with pro surfers dropping in on every wave. They would only surf the big wave up to about three feet—anything bigger than that scared both girls, so they would end up surfing in the whitewash (which was usually a good two to three feet anyway) or at the sand beach.

“Yeah, no kidding. Remember when Audrey wore her sunglasses out the back of the big wave?”

Both girls let out a laugh.

“Oh, shit, that was funny. She was so stoned and just paddled out the back of those big-ass seven-foot waves wearing her sunglasses.”

That had been when they were staying at Auntie Lorrie’s. Steph and Jenny had been drinking their morning kopi Aceh and enjoying a cigarette when they’d noticed one of the surfers was their friend Audrey. The thing was that Audrey was high the entire time she was in Jauh. Even Hamden, who dealt and smoked weed all the time, was shocked by Audrey’s consumption. Audrey, barely a surfer at all, had tumbled over sideways as a wave pummeled her, and, when she popped up, her sunglasses were gone.

“That wave just came out of nowhere! That must’ve been such a shock for her.” Jenny swirled her hand in the warm water, cupping a palm of water, and tipped it over her shoulders, which were dry already.

“Speaking of rogue waves, we just got lucky,” Steph said, dropping to her stomach and turning her surfboard around.

Glancing up, Jenny saw a nice set of waves finally rolling in. Using her hands and feet like rotors, Jenny turned her board so it was facing the beach. Then, she dropped down to her stomach and paddled with long strokes. “Party wave!”
